In 1922, Long Beach was incorporated as a city.  The schools were under municipal administration and the mayor appointed the Board of Education. The independent Long Beach Union Free School District was formed in 1924, and in 1951 it became a City School District.  Today the residents of the Long Beach City School District elect the members of the Board of Education.

Long Beach has seven schools servicing a school population of approximately 4600 students. The district consists of one pre-kindergarten school, four elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, one alternative high school, and an adult learning center.
